Technically speaking, our trip started yesterday afternoon as we decided to drive down to Durban for the night to visit Kevin’s family. We had driven down from Monzi on the Elephant Coast which took us just about 3 hours. You don’t, however, need to have an overnight stop in Durban to get to the Drakensberg if taking this route. We left Durban this morning at about 10am and decided to take the scenic route to Pietermaritzburg instead of the taking the N3 highway. This route starts off from Kloof in the ‘Valley of 1000 hills’ and takes you along winding roads with spectacular views. The old main road used to be the main route to the Midlands before the N3 was built and is also known as ‘The Comrades’ route, which is a 90km yearly marathon.
